ORIGINS & PRODUCTION
The pomegranate is the fruit of the pomegranate tree, which originated in Persia. The pomegranate is a beautiful ornamental tree, examples of which have lived for nearly two centuries in the gardens at the Château de Versailles.
It has been grown for centuries all around the Mediterranean basin (Italy, Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey) and in North America (California and Florida). Pomegranate production is also well established in the Caribbean and Latin America.
In ancient Egypt, the pomegranate was a symbol of ambition and prosperity. They used to be fermented to obtain a heady wine.
DESCRIPTION & APPEARANCE
Pomegranates are similar to apples in terms of shape. They remain green until they start to ripen, when they become an orangey-red. They are a non-climacteric fruit.
Pomegranates weigh between 300 and 350 grams. Inside, they contain numerous pinkish garnet coloured, sweet, juicy seeds, about the same size as sweet corn. This flesh can also be slightly tart, and it is this balance of sweetness and acidity that is so appreciated by pomegranate fans.
NUTRITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
& PREPARATION
Pomegranates have a subtle fragrance and this, combined with their colour, give them a somewhat exotic, mysterious character.
They are particularly rich in vitamin C, and possess numerous health benefits. Pomegranates are reputed to be a powerful antioxidant when eaten fresh and whole.
They are generally eaten raw (fresh), but can be used in cooked dishes, and make excellent juice.
