DESCRIPTION & APPEARANCE
A “tropical fruit”, the pineapple has a tuft of green spiky leaves and a rough exterior covered with hexagon shapes. Under its skin, which ranges from green to ochre, the yellow flesh has a sweet flavour. It is available on our stalls throughout the year.
ORIGIN & PRODUCTION
This fruit is grown in hot regions, particularly in South and Central America. Pineapples are harvested at maturity or when nearly ripe depending on the chosen method of transport (plane or boat), i.e. when their external colour changes from green to yellow.
However, the Extra Sweet variety is ripe when its skin is still green. Its colour is said to give absolutely no indication of ripeness.
This product is non-climacteric (once harvested, it stops ripening).
VARIETY AT TOTAL PRODUCE INDIGO
Several varieties of pineapple are grown. TOTAL PRODUCE INDIGO distributes Extra Sweet.
NUTRITIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
& PREPARATION
Consumption of pineapple is widespread in the world, including in France, as a fresh fruit or juice and also in sweet-savoury dishes.
It is high in vitamin C. Despite being known for its fragrant, sweet, juicy flesh, it is relatively low in calories, making it a very healthy fruit in terms of nutrition.
And therefore ideal to include in your diet on a regular basis!
